New safety barriers on way for fatal crash, drink driving sites But they won’t be finished until next year By Sarla Donovan NEW SAFETY barriers will be put up on Main Rd after two serious crashes within a year – one which claimed a life. But they won’t be completed until February next year. In March, Mt Pleasant resident Maureen Imrie, Sarah Jane 73, died when the vehicle her Arrow husband was driving slammed through a rickety wooden barrier near Shag Rock and plunged into the sea. Witnesses were able to pull Bruce Imrie, 77, out of the vehicle, but it was swept away by an undertow before they were able to rescue Mrs Imrie. The accident came a year to

the day after repeat drink-driver Sarah Arrow crashed through a nearby barrier in Moncks Bay, badly injuring several pedestrians.

Mr Imrie told Bay Harbour News yesterday he was pleased at news of the safety measures. “If there had been a proper metal safety barrier in place,

there would (still) have been an accident, but it probably wouldn’t have been fatal. It was going into the estuary that killed my wife.” Police are still investigating the

fatal crash. It’s been a tough year for the pensioner, whose daughter died suddenly of leukaemia just two months after his wife’s death. A new safety barrier will be installed at the bend by Shag Rock by February next year. There will also be a new 100m section of barrier constructed south of the Shag Rock bend. Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board member Darrell Latham said the measures were long overdue. “That is a Darrell problematic Latham corner with a long history of accidents. We need to ensure not only that vehicles are safe from going off the road at the corner, but also the safety of people walking from the Christchurch Yacht Club to Shag Rock.” After Mrs Imrie’s death, Dr Latham met with city council staff and police, and sought urgent action on both sites. It’s taken well over a year to get to this point and you’ve got to wonder why. The changes have been prompted by two serious crashes, the first in 2016 and the second in March, a fatal - the tragic death of Mt Pleasant woman Maureen Imrie. But here’s the interesting part. The new barriers won’t be finished until February next year. That’s nearly two years since the first serious crash involving drunk driver Sarah Arrow, who hit a group of pedestrians. That’s a worry. Council’s property goldmine But will the community see any of it? By Sarla Donovan THE CITY council is sitting on millions of dollars of Banks Peninsula property which it must decide to keep or sell. In total, there are about 28 properties in Banks Peninsula with a combined value of more than $6.6m. More than half of that value is in three properties in Akaroa and Diamond Harbour, which together are valued at $3.5m. But there are no guarantees the money will stay within the Banks Peninsula community if they’re sold. If properties are considered surplus and sold off, the use of the proceeds would be determined “on a case-by-case basis”, according to city council head of facilities, property and planning, Bruce Rendall. Banks Peninsula Community Board member and deputy mayor, Andrew Turner, said he would expect that if property was sold, the money would

go into general city council funds. He said the city council no longer used “jam jar” accounting and this was standard practice. Another board member, Janis Haley agreed: “It’s the same with funds from the cruise ships. Times have changed – we’ve amalgamated and we have to accept that.” Yew Cottage, at 40 Rue Jolie, has a registered value of $700,000. The city council purchased the building in 1981 to ensure it was not replaced by a taller building which might shade the bowling green next door, but it has been empty

for the past 10 years and now requires substantial repairs. An area between the cottage and the harbour is used informally as car parking for the bowling club. The building has a notable listing in the Banks Peninsula District Plan and is incorporated within Akaroa’s historic area. Two parties interested in using the property were declined by the community board in June. The Akaroa Resource Collective Trust aimed to “provide, promote and support charitable services beneficial to the Banks

Peninsula community.” The other interested party was a private buyer. The board decided neither would be suitable and was now working to “identify a local solution for the future management of Yew Cottage.” Another property in the heart of Akaroa, currently leased as a butchery and deli and for community use, is valued at $1.46m. In Diamond Harbour, a 38ha block of rural-zoned land behind the school at 27 Hunter’s Rd is valued at $1.4m Described as a “large parcel of land which could lend itself to several uses,” the property borders Bayview Rd to the south, farmland to the east and residential land to the north. Clash over intersection in Redcliffs School battle

By Sarla Donovan THE INTERSECTION of Main Rd and Beachville Rd has become a new factor in the battle over a new Redcliffs School site. Friends of Redcliffs Park chairwoman Simi Desor said the lack of clarity around what would happen with the potentially dangerous Beachville Rd intersection was a real concern. “The process has not been transparent and many people aren’t happy about it. Changes to the intersection, signage, lights who will pay for it? None of that has been explained.” Public consultation on the Ministry of Education proposal to rebuild the school on Redcliffs Park, creating a land swap with the old school site, closed on June 26. A hearing panel has been appointed to work through the 800 submissions received. The panel would then make a recommendation to the city council on whether to go ahead with the land swap. But Redcliffs School Board of Trustees chairman Darren Fidler said Mrs Desor’s concerns were unfounded because a decision

commissioned from New Zealand composer Gareth Farr. The programme also featured a new major work written for the band by renowned English composer Peter Graham. The 39th Parallel is based on the landscape and mythology of the Wanganui region in memory of brass band icon Kevin Jarrett. The band performed concerts in Stein, the Netherlands, and Aachen, Germany, before returning to New Zealand last week.

He said once the ministry had certainty, it would do “a lot more work”, including specifics around buildings and transport. “This includes (how to manage) the traffic. At this stage, there are no traffic issues in Redcliffs that are any worse than elsewhere in Christchurch or New Zealand.” Because the school would likely back onto the coastal pathway, he said pupils who could get onto

Pair lucky to survive horror smash By Andrew King TWO PEOPLE are lucky to be alive after a horror smash saw their vehicle leave the road and end up in a nearby property early on Sunday. The vehicle the man and woman were in smashed through a wooden power pole and a tree before flying over a 2m wall, narrowly missing a house in Robinsons Bay about midnight. Residents who heard the crash raced to the scene and found the vehicle in a neighbouring prop-

erty after leaving the Christchurch Akaroa Rd. Akaroa Senior Constable Anita Osborne said she could not believe how lucky the two occupants were when she first arrived. “If you looked at the scene you wouldn’t think anyone could have survived,” she said. Emergency services arrived and firefighters cut free a 27-year-old woman who was then airlifted to Christchurch Hospital with head injuries. The driver, who suffered a

broken back and ribs, was taken to hospital by ambulance. The power pole was snapped off at the base and found in the paddock a number of metres away, while debris from the tree was littered around the property - there was a big piece of wood protruding from the windscreen. The woman involved in the crash told Bay Harbour News on Monday she could not remember anything about the crash or the ride in the helicopter. That was probably a good thing, she said.

A RECENT visit to the Morgans Gully Restoration project showed great growth in plants. The aim of the community project, which has been running for more than two years, was to restore native vegetation to the entire gully area. It also aimed to improve the water quality of the stream and increase the food sources available for native birds and insects. More than 2000 plants have been planted over the two years, much more than originally estimated, and swathes of gorse and broom have been removed. There has been strong community and volunteer support for the project, and regular watering of the plants has been organised by the volunteers. The project was done through a $13,600 Immediate Steps funding grant. Environment Canterbury has more than $1m available annually for protection and restoration of biodiversity on private and public land. New pipes for Main Rd Rock fall risk no longer hindering work

NEW PIPES will be laid underneath the Peacocks Gallop section of Main Rd in Sumner over the next few months. The replacement of the quake-damaged water and wastewater pipes has not been able to proceed before now because of the high rock fall risk. However, now the geotechnical hazards have been addressed and the shipping containers removed, work can begin on replacing the damaged pipes beneath the roadway. A new wastewater pipe will be installed under the centre of the road. A second water supply pipe will also be added to increase the resilience of the network. The new water pipe will carry 4.3 million litres of water a day – enough to nearly fill an Olympic-size swimming pool twice over – and service homes in Clifton Bay, Richmond Hill, Sumner, Scarborough

be maintaining two lanes of traffic along Main Rd to minimise congestion and delays. Some work will need to be carried out at night. When that is happening traffic may be reduced to one lane for periods,’’ Mr Mackie said. The contractor, Fulton Hogan, will be taking steps to keep noise to a minimum when working at night. Environment Canterbury received 44 submissions, with the majority opposing the LPC project. The channel’s length would be doubled to 6.km, widened by 20m and its depth increased by 5-6m. Under the plan, 18 million cu m of sediment would be sucked up and dumped offshore over two years, mostly at a disposal site 6km away from Godley Head. A hearings panel led by Sir Graham Panckhurst decided “by a considerable margin” that the consents be granted, but stressed the need for responsibility by LPC. The panel said that although there would be environmental effects, the proposed safeguards were “impressive.” The consents were granted for 35 years.

THE EXPANSION of Lyttelton Harbour’s shipping channel has been approved in spite of stern opposition from iwi, residents and marine farmers. Lyttelton Port of Christchurch has received four resource consents to deepen the harbour channel, allowing larger ships to enter the port. The project would cost up to $120 million. A deeper channel is required to service larger ships, which were becoming standard worldwide, the company said. There has been opposition to the plan, with Sumner and Taylors Mistake residents saying they are worried the sediment will cause a “silt beach.” Marine farmers also called for strict conditions, including comprehensive monitoring, to be put in place if the consent was granted.

Feedback sought on reserves MEMBERS OF the community can provide their input on how the Te Oka and Misty Peaks reserves should be looked after. The city council wants feedback on how people think the two large reserves should be managed. It is looking to put together draft management plans for the reserves to ensure they are looked after and protected for generations to come through future development and general maintenance. Te Oka Reserve is the only park on Banks Peninsula which provides the opportunity for sea to summit ecological restoration. The city council bought 903ha of farmland adjoining Te Oka

and Tumbledown bays to form the park, with the aim of protecting and enhancing biodiversity and to provide recreational opportunities in a natural setting. The reserve has an existing track network and provides swimmers and surfers access to both bays. Misty Peaks Reserve is a scenic park created when the city council bought 500ha of the former Mt Desmond Station. It sits alongside the privately-owned Hinewai Reserve and surrounds the Department of Conservationadministered Armstrong Reserve. Misty Peaks Reserve is home to a range of native birds and lizards and a number of rare or

threatened plants. Together, the reserves provide nearly 1700ha of land with high recreation and conservation value. They are close to Akaroa and easily reached from three main roads. Once the initial public input is collected, a draft plan will be put together and presented to the public for feedback in November. By Sarla Donovan REDCLIFFS RESIDENT John Cook is giving the native bird population a helping hand by setting up a trap library. People can now borrow rat and stoat traps from the Redcliffs Community Shed to put in their gardens. A $250 grant from the LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Community Board helped Mr Cook to set up the library. The urban initiative is part of a broader push to create a predatorfree Port Hills. Mr Cook said similar urban-trapping schemes have been running in Wellington after predator-free advocate Kelvin Hastie spent two years helping the Wellington suburb of Crofton Downs become free of rats, stoats and other mustelids. More recently, Khandallah, Ngaio, Wadestown, Wilton, Highbury and Mirimar have joined the cause. There had been a “proliferation” of rats and stoats after the Canterbury earthquakes, Mr Cook said, and the native bird population was under threat nationally, along with insects, gheckos, lizards and others. Pushing fashion boundaries By Sarla Donovan HE MAY still be studying, but third year Ara Institute fashion student William Roper has already worked with top New Zealand designers. Mr Roper, who lives in Governor’s Bay, recently showed off his industry-directed collection for Ara’s annual exhibition. The striking black and white designs were inspired by an internship with Auckland designer James Dobson of JimmyD. “James was a judge at the Hokonui Fashion Awards, where I happened to win a section and he remembered my work. That was a factor in him deciding to take me on I think,” Mr Roper said. Fashion design was always on the cards for Mr Roper, after his mother introduced him to sewing while still at primary school. He attended the Rudolf Steiner School in Opawa throughout primary and high school. “Mum taught me to sew and that piqued an interest in pattern making and construction. So I’ve been pottering around on a sewing machine for quite a few years.” Jimmy D’s aesthetic matches his own. “I like black because it goes

It’s quite wild - when you lay it out flat, you wonder where is my head going, where do my arms go? But it’s still a garment that is worn – that was my most innovative piece.”

The Transformer was one of many designs that Mr Roper sold during the exhibition. Next up is the end of year runway show Pitch - his last chance to show the industry what he can do before graduation. He hopes to work for a small label doing onshore manufacturing. Then one day he might just start his own label – watch this space. Fire-breather makes the stage By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LEARNING TO breath fire could be seen as a daunting way to get into Lyttelton’s stage. But that’s how Woolston’s Aaron Boyce, 48, debuted on the stage, blowing fire for the former Christchurch Drama Centre’s show Linnaeus Prince of Flowers. “Somebody said to me ‘do you want to be a fire breather?’ And I said I am willing to learn,” he said. Nearly 20 years down the track, Boyce may not be breathing flames in his latest show but he will play a key role in Top Dog Theatre’s latest show Up ‘N’ Under by John Godber. Set in England, the show is based around an ex-professional rugby league player called Arthur (Tom Trevella), who bets his life savings he can train a team to beat the undefeated Cobblers Arm. Boyce has two roles in the show. He plays Reg Welsh, a member of the Cobblers Arm, and amateur league player Steve, who helps form the team to take down the Cobblers Arm side. He described Steve as “flamboyant” and a “bit of a lad” while Reg Welsh is mature and wellto-do, with a bit of coin behind him. He said Steve is basically the comic relief in the show. SNOW FUN: Twenty one excited Christchurch teenagers attended an overnight snow camp in Tekapo last week. The event was part of Youthtown’s Breakaway Holiday programme which aims to engage young people in a range of physical and mental activities and challenges. The group spent the two days completing a range of individual and team challenges as well as fun, snow-based activities such as snow tubing, sledding and ice skating. The Breakaway programme continues this week with Christchurch based activities for the group.

Glass case for sod cottage Lyttelton services JAMES PENFOLD’S 1870’s sod cottage is to be repaired. Located in Scott Park near the Ferrymead Bridge, the heritage landmark with its original sod block construction offers a unique insight into early earth-building techniques used by 19th century Canterbury settlers. The sod hut was the home of Captain James Penfold (1832-1905) who was master of the schooner Excelsior which traded between New Zealand and Australia and was wrecked on the Sumner Bar. Penfold used material from the wrecked ship and sods cut from the river when building his cottage. Carolyn Ingles, head of urban regeneration, design and heritage at the city council, said the cottage was badly damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake. “The walls facing Main Road and Ferrymead Bridge are largely intact, and these can be repaired to keep the historic street view of the cottage,” Ms Ingles said. “However, some of the remaining walls are too badly damaged to repair – so rather than deconstruct and reconstruct the cottage with new materials, which will remove a lot of the heritage fabric that makes it such a historic building, we’re proposing to enclose those parts in toughened glass. “The proposed stabilisation and

By Caitlin Miles THE LOONS Club and struggling Lyttelton Community House both received a funding boost to help cover operating costs. The two groups requested funding from the Banks Peninsula Community Board to help pay for things like rent, power and insurance. The Loons Club is different to the Loons Theatre Trust. It operates mainly as a Working Mens Club and plans to provide a multi-purpose community facility for local groups and organisations to hire the space once its facility is rebuilt. It is currently in the final stages of rebuilding on its premises at 16 Canterbury St after it suffered significant damage in the February 22, 2011 earthquake. The club has spent the last six years focused on raising funds for the rebuild. The Maritime Union has agreed to lend the funds needed for the rebuild but it does not cover the operational costs.

REBUILD: The Loons Club is hoped to be completed within the next six months. The community board agreed to provide $1667 to help cover those costs. The Lyttelton Community House is in a similar position, it needs funding to help pay for power, insurance and telephone and internet costs. The community house has struggled with a lack of funding recently. It has to cut staff and reduce its hours to be able to operate. The house is run by volunteers and provides social services to the area. The community board also agreed to provide $1667. Both groups have been encouraged to apply for the further funding from the Strengthening Communities 2017-2018 fund.

Your Local Views Residents’ associations play an important role

News List MP for the Port Hills Nuk Korako reflects on the role of residents’ associations in our democracy

in Wellington. The Sumner Residents’ Association has also worked hard alongside Sumner Green and Skate to restore a permanent skate park to their community. And, in Mt Pleasant, the residents’ association has done a stellar job of providing a central community facility for use by residents. Residents’ associations help amplify the voice of residents in the community when they need to get their point across. Whether it is at the community board, council or central Government level, they help to keep us informed and ensure we stay connected to the people we represent and assist them wherever we can. Importantly, they do a lot to support their communities and, in return, they depend on the support of residents to function. If you aren’t a member of your local association, why not look them up, join, or even see how you can help out? I talked in my last column about the benefits of volunteering – and your local residents’ association might just be the perfect place to start.

Fashion Where would we be without our residents’ associations? One of the things I think we do particularly well here in the Port Hills is care for our communities and look out for each other. Residents’ associations play a vital role in advocating on behalf of our communities, improving social and communal facilities and working on everything from small issues to large projects. They contribute significantly by involving the community in issues that affect them, as well as boosting communication and create networking opportunities. You only have to look through the pages of Bay Harbour News or attend a residents’ association meeting to see how involved the they are. Jet ski users warned: Don’t behave like an idiot Lyttelton-based navigational safety officer Gary Manch writes about jet ski safety and looking out for others while using the water Just as I thought things were settling down for the winter, our office received a complaint from one of the local New Brighton surfies about four jet skis playing around close to the surfers and the pier supports. The surfer provided a video and, to be honest, it does not portray the jet ski users in a good light. The most annoying thing here is that in spite of the surfer remonstrating with the jet ski users because he was concerned for his safety, they chose to ignore him and continued to travel at speed very close to the pier and the water user. Now I hear you thinking that the jet ski users had control of their vessels and the surfer surely would have been safe? From my experience no matter how good you are, risk is always

there, and with the eastern seashore being kilometres long there are plenty of other places to play and have fun safely. Sadly these people decided for whatever reason to put other water users at risk. This behaviour is just plain stupid and does a lot to damage the goodwill between different groups of water users. While the majority of jet ski users are very good and comply with the rules and regulations, it only takes a few to bring a bad name to an otherwise responsible group. The rules are very simple: If you are within 50m of

any person in the water, or within 200m of any shore or structure, then the maximum speed is 5 knots (around 9.3km/h). My message to you is clear – please enjoy the water safely, and don’t behave like an idiot and put other people at risk. Hopefully, someone who reads this article will know the people on the jet skis involved and pass on my comments. At the end of the day, I want people to be courteous to others and obey the rules that are there for everyone’s safety. That’s it for this week. Take care.

Ferrymead Rotarians had a strong inkling they were on to a good thing when Ryan Pearce approached them for support to get to the waka ama (outrigger canoeing) world championships. Club member Barbara Crooks writes about how it worked out

Fashion The 34-year-old South Brighton School teacher was part of a para-six which paddled to a silver medal at the World Distance Waka Ama Championships in Tahiti a couple of weeks ago. Pearce, who has used a brace on his right leg since spinal surgery eight years ago, had been paddling for just 12 months before making the New Zealand team. To get to Tahiti he – and each of his fellow paddlers –had to raise $4000 in three months since the team was named in March. His personal and professional attributes impressed Ferrymead

Rotary members so much they readily agreed. And while they thought their contribution modest, Ryan pointed out that they had paid his Christchurch to Auckland airfare – without which he wouldn’t have made

the plane to Tahiti. After his selection was confirmed in March, he had to fund a medical examination, and flights, food and accommodation for three training camps (in Napier, Auckland and Tauranga)

and the world champs in Tahiti. As he says, there are no free rides for truly amateur sports in New Zealand. His waka success further reflected Pearce’s resolve since complications with a 2009

operation to remove a varicose vein on his spinal cord left him with no feeling from the waist down. A month later, thanks to his intensive rehabilitation efforts, he was walking with the help of a stick on his wedding day. Two years later, the remnant of the vein forced another operation, six weeks in hospital, and back to work on physio in a wheelchair. The next year, he tackled the 2.8km harbour crossing swim in Auckland, dragging himself across almost entirely with his arms. He has done four more distance swims since. But he believes he trained harder for waka than his swims because he didn’t want to let his mates down. He’s also quick to point out that, while one of the seven paddlers did not get a start in Tahiti, the performance was very much a team effort. Pearce sees “paddling in some capacity” as very much a part of his immediate sporting future. He believes he’s best suited to longer distances, which opens the way for him to bring his swimming, paddling and perhaps other endurance talents together.

The combination of rain and sleet all week, combined with Saturday’s sunny weather, made for perfect conditions, with the course’s ditches filled with water. Some of the younger competitors even found themselves knee deep in it. Hero Barrettelli and Fred Fitch, both seven-years-old, finished first and third respectively in the grade eight boys event. Amelie Clark followed suit by picking up third place in the grade eight girls, while Charlie Bailey finished second in the grade 12 boys. In the seniors, both Nathan Jones and Dave Fitch took out their age categories. “We’re probably still a year away from thinking that we can sit up at the big table with the big

boys,” said Dodgson. Saturday’s match at Burnside Park will give the club a good

gauge of where they are at. The two teams met back in round six of the round-robin season, with Burnside winning 25-14. At the time, it was Sumner’s sixth straight loss to start the year and it sealed their fate in the bottom six (section two). “We had a lot of key players missing that day, but that game still irks us,” said Dodgson. “We feel like we’ve got nothing to lose, they’ve come down from the top six and won’t want to go and lose to a bottom six team.” The other plate semi-final will see New Brighton host High School Old Boys at Rawhiti Domain.

Ferrymead Bays bring cups home SPORTS TWO OF Ferrymead Bays junior football teams collected silverware over the last week. The club had four teams competing at the Christchurch International Cup held at the Christchurch Football Centre in Yaldhurst. Bays ninth grade team achieved the best result, finishing second in their age group. They defeated Selwyn United 3-0 in the quarter-finals and Dunedin Technical 3-1 in the semi-final, before falling to Tauranga’s AllStars Football Academy 0-4 in the final.

The 10th grade team finished third, defeating Aoraki Black 2-0 in their quarter-final. They then lost 3-4 to Coastal Spirit in the semi-final, before defeating Canterbury United 4-1 in the play-off for third spot. The Bays 12th grade team finished fifth, while the 11th grade team finished 14th. The club also had two girls’ teams competing in the Alan Fraser Memorial Tournament at Kendall Park in Kaiapoi. Both the 13th and 11th grade Bays teams finished seventh in their competitions.

Keep hydrated, two thirds of your body is made of water, so keeping hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Dehydration symptoms range from headaches to nausea to fatigue, but the effects of dehydration on your immune system are not always as obvious. Staying hydrated keeps the mucus membranes moist, which keeps the immune system functioning optimally. Unfortunately, lattes and wine don’t count, but upping your intake of water is incredibly beneficial. aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. You’ll notice the difference!

Eat in season, poor nutrition impairs the immune response. Fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and legumes or pulses are full of immune-boosting properties and antioxidants. Nature provides fresh seasonal foods to compensate for what our bodies are lacking at that time of year. Kiwifruit & citrus fruits that are in season throughout winter are packed with Vitamin C. Stress less, although short periods of stress can actually be good for us longterm chronic stress lowers our immunity, making us more susceptible to colds and flu. Not only are you doing your adrenal glands a favour, you’re also reducing your chances of being struck down by the latest virus. Get a good night’s sleep, sleep is essential for your body to rest, repair and rejuvenate. (Don’t you find you always tend to look your best after a good night’s sleep?) The human growth hormone that’s released during sleep helps repair your body at a cellular level, but it’s also beneficial for the immune system.

Interrupted sleep (or just not enough of it) significantly reduces the effectiveness of your immune system, particularly the natural killer cells, which is your body’s first line of defence against germs.
